The Magic of Morning Rituals (And How They Can Transform Your Day)

Image
Why Rituals Matter At Bahia Mar, mornings begin softly. The ocean moves slowly. The sun rises patiently. And we, too, are invited to begin gently - before the world pulls at us with its noise and speed. Over the years, I’ve come to see mornings not as something to rush through but as a sacred window. A doorway into the kind of day - and life - we want to create. And that’s where morning rituals come in. Small. Simple. But profoundly powerful. Morning Rituals How you begin your day sets the tone for everything that follows. Most of us wake up and immediately check our phones. From the first minute, we’re responding to others’ needs - messages, news, notifications. But when we create a pause at the start of the day, even just for 10 minutes, we reclaim something vital: PRESENCE. Science supports what many wellness practices have long taught: morning rituals help regulate cortisol (our stress hormone), improve focus and even support emotional resilience. But more than that - they help us ...

How Nature Resets Our Brain Chemistry (And Why We Need More Green in Our Lives)

Image
I often see it happen here at Bahia Mar...  Guests arrive tense, distracted, and carrying the weight of a busy, noisy life. And then… something begins to shift. The shoulders drop. The breathing slows. The eyes soften. At first, it seems like “holiday mode,” but, as a yoga teacher, I know it’s something deeper - it’s their brain chemistry starting to change. And the secret ingredient? Nature. Your Brain on Nature Science now confirms what many of us have felt instinctively all our lives: time in nature changes the way our brains work.  Just a few minutes outdoors can reduce cortisol (our stress hormone), increase serotonin and dopamine (our feel-good neurotransmitters), and activate the parasympathetic nervous system - the one responsible for rest, repair and digestion. It’s not just about “getting fresh air”, It’s about recalibrating your entire system, reminding your brain and body what calm really feels like. The Green Effect Research shows that spending time in green...

Why We Retreat: The Gift of Stillness in a Noisy World

Image
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen guests arrive at our little corner of paradise looking… well, tired.  Not just physically tired, but soul tired . The kind of exhaustion that comes not only from overworking, but from overstimulation - where your brain won’t shut up, your sleep isn’t restful and the days blur into each other in a carousel of to-do lists and notifications. It always reminds me why retreats matter. Why we need them now more than ever. Rest Isn’t Laziness - It’s Necessary For many of us, holidays have become another task. We try to do too much. We race to squeeze in sights, snap Instagram-perfect photos, eat at all the places we bookmarked six months ago… and we come home more tired than when we left. But what if we reimagined our time off not as a break from work, but as a return to ourselves? At Bahia Mar, I’ve watched guests slowly unfurl over days - some in the rhythm of yoga and breathing exercises, others in long, slow swims or sunset walks. It’s...

Plastic pollution — it’s OUR problem!

Image
Stunned by the facts detailed herein, Bahia Mar has been making every effort  to be ‘plastic pro-active’ and environmentally sensitive. Our commitment Here, where we are surrounded by nature’s majesty, we feel a special responsibility. We are very concerned about the critical situation in our oceans and accordingly have a strict recycling policy. We are one of only two companies in the area who contract an outside organisation to handle our recyclables, the other being global giant Sasol. Furthermore we are currently looking for ways to reduce our plastic dependence. ‘Indestructible’ glass straws have been ordered and our bottled water purchases are under review as we investigate filtered glass drinking water. We are also in the process of changing our take-away containers to biodegradable and we have moved away from individual amenities in the rooms in favour of bulk dispensers. Beach cleaning To assist our ocean dwelling creatures and to do our share to protect our...

Fishing for Schools!

Image
We entered our beautiful monohole luxury speedboat, Mothassane, into the annual Big Blue Vilankulo Sailfish Competition - in aid of our beloved community project Bonguilli, aiding pre-school education in the area. Our three fisherwoman (Susana, Gretha and Dee) were as new to fishing as their vessel and not many believed they actually stood a chance. Never the less, they prepared for 5 days of hard fishing on the high seas and Mothassane and the ladies, exceeded almost everyone’s expectations: The Mothassane Mermaids landed an overall second place and caught the biggest Whahoo of the week, weighing in at 21,5 kg! “I learnt so much about fishing and the greater Billfish family in the 5 days at sea.” Dee Lourens  (our social media manager and photographer ) said after an exhausting week. “Our Captain Alex was meticulous and patient, teaching us exactly what to do when a fish strikes, why it was important to tagg them and what scientists from the Billfish Foundation actually do ...

Culinary delights at Bahia Mar, courtesy of our chef Nelson!

Image
Young, enthusiastic and very talented, 27 year old Nelson Manabele, our new Executive Chef, is proving to be a genuine asset to the Bahia Mar team. One of five children born and schooled in Maputo, Nelson was unable to go to university and so chose to attend the Hotel School Andalucia in Maputo where he studied for 18 months.  A six-month kitchen practical followed his training which he served at the Pestana Rovuma Hotel  and Conference Centre, also in Maputo. Spending the next year assisting his businessman father provided an insight into commercial enterprise, but the kitchen was calling! A cousin associated with the tourism industry put Nelson’s name forward for a position as commis chef at the famous Azura Lodge on Benguerra Island  where he worked under a South African trained chef. “I learned a lot from Chef Mika” Nelson explains and my two years there provided a great opportunity for growth”. The lights of the mainland beckoned however and, h...

Unique Fisherman photos to raise funds for school project

Image
We were delighted when renowned South African photographer Dee Louw suggested she compile a portfolio of photographs of our local fishermen and women for sale, to boost the coffers. These exquisite, limited edition, framed photos will be exhibited from 15th December in the hotel foyer. Prints will also be available via our website from early December — delivered worldwide. We want to put in another water pump to benefit the community in the area so the money from the sale of the photos will be put towards that as well as the ongoing running and maintenance of the school. The Bonguili Project is very close to the hearts of the management and staff of Bahia Mar.  Supporting a unique preschool — 5ยบ Congresso Escola, which was founded in 2001, the hotel‘s funding is the primary income for this facility which empowers over 80 children.  Convening from 8 – 11am, the children learn the alphabet, to do basic sums and are taught necessary ...
